## Steinberg Sports opens new action sports division, SSE Action

Steinberg Sports & Entertainment (SSE) announced a larger expansion into action sports representation through the creation of SSE Action. Veteran action sports agent Patrick Murphy will lead the division and serve as Senior Vice President of Action Operations. SSE Action boasts an elite client roster, including Olympic snowboarders Emily Arthur, Lucas Foster, and Courtney Rummel; U.S. Team snowboarders Sonny Alba and Ty Schnorrbusch; and U.S. skier Kate Gray.

“We are excited to launch SSE Action to better serve the action sports and action content communities,” said SSE CEO Chris Cabott. “The mix of Patrick’s representation experience and SSE’s existing resources provides unparalleled opportunities for action talent to grow their careers.”

Murphy joined SSE in May when the agency acquired Equity Baseball. SSE CEO Chris Cabott told SBJ. “When we formed Equity Baseball earlier this year, of which Patrick Murphy is the COO, we learned that he also had an action sports clientele, including a number of Olympians. With SSE representing Nigel and Patrick having a long history in action sports, it made sense to form SSE Action.” Murphy’s son is a snowboarder, and he began meeting snowboarders while attending his son’s events, Murphy told SBJ. “During those years we traveled to numerous competitions throughout the country where I then met and developed relationships with many riders and industry insiders,” Murphy said. “I then signed my first snowboard clients after realizing that many of the riders that my son trained with while a member of the Mammoth Elite Team did not have professional representation, but instead were trying to market and represent themselves. The action sports practice grew from there.” SSE Action’s first clients include Olympic snowboarders Emily Arthur, Lucas Foster and Courtney Rummel; U.S. Team snowboarders Sonny Alba and Ty Schnorrbusch; and U.S. skier Kate Gray.

## Steinberg Sports Signed Soccer Player Ally Lemos

Steinberg Sports and Entertainment (SSE) recently announced the signing of UCLA midfielder **Ally Lemos** for NIL (name, image and likeness) representation.Ally is the first female athlete to be signed by Steinberg Sports & Entertainment. Lemos is part of UCLA’s No. 1 ranked freshman class in the nation this year and is ranked No. 22 overall by Top Drawer Soccer. She attended San Dimas High School and as named the San Gabriel Valley Tribune Soccer Player of the Year and to the All-Area, All-CIF and all-league first teams.

“We are honored to welcome Ally to the SSE family,” said SSE CEO Chris Cabott. “SSE represents people of elite talent and elite character. Ally embodies both as an athlete and as a person, so this is a natural fit. Her agent at SSE, Patrick Murphy, is one of the best and brightest talent representatives that I have ever met. I believe in his vision for Ally, and I’m excited for what the future holds.”

Murphy says Lemos is in a prime position to capitalize on NIL opportunities.

“Ally Lemos is an exemplary young woman both on and off the pitch and a rising star in women’s soccer,” said agent Patrick Murphy. “We are honored and excited to welcome Ally into the SSE family, and I look forward to representing her in NIL opportunities.”

UCLA is coming off a big win against No. 1 and No. 2 ranked UNC and Duke teams, which should shine more of a spotlight on Lemos and the entire UCLA team. Lemos says she’s excited to work with SSE.

“It’s a dream come true to be joining the SSE family, and I’m so honored to be both their first female athlete and soccer player represented in the NIL space,” said Ally Lemos. “SSE represents many elite athletes, and I love the way they embrace and respect their athletes’ passions both on and off the field.

“My current passion is doing everything I can alongside my teammates at UCLA to bring a PAC-12 and national championship home. My forever mission is to always push the women’s game forward, and to not only be a champion for myself but to always be one for others as well.”

Lemos likely won’t be the only UCLA women’s soccer player generating interest in the NIL marketplace this year. Her current teammate Reilyn Turner was the first college athlete signed by Nike in December 2021, and UCLA’s performance on the field so far this season will certainly bring more attention to all the women

## Sports Agencies Merge to Form Partnership

**Newport Beach, CA -** Steinberg Sports & Entertainment announced Thursday that they are forming a partnership with Reynolds Sports Management to create Equity Baseball.

It will be the baseball division of Steinberg Sports, led by chairman Larry Reynolds, who was the founder and president of Reynolds Sports Management. Terry Jones will be president of the agency’s baseball operations.

“My goal was to take a very special model, a true hybrid of resources, and bring in a unique mix to that,’’ said Steinberg Sports & Entertainment CEO Chris Cabott, who negotiated Mahomes’ 10-year, $450 million contract extension. “There was only one baseball group we thought of to support that vision, and that was with Larry Reynolds.’’

The Steinberg agency, which was founded by high-powered NFL agent Leigh Steinberg, has long represented NFL players and NBA players, but now adds baseball players into their company. There will now be about 125 MLB, NFL and NBA players under one umbrella at Equity Baseball.

“We all rely on referrals from someone you love and trust, and this was a simple decision for us,’’ said Reynolds, who started his company in 1997. “It’s like we were cut out for each other, sharing ideas and having a kindred vision. It just felt comfortable. Chris and his colleagues have not only been very successful, but they have done so with a high degree of integrity.’’

The relationship began with the simple introduction from former MLB pitcher LaTroy Hawkins, who was represented by Reynolds throughout his 21-year career. Hawkins also happens to be the Mahomes’ godfather, becoming close friends with his father, Pat Mahomes, when they played together with the Minnesota Twins.

“We’re really thankful it all came together,’’ Cabott said. “We think it’s a unique hybrid. …This partnership reflects years of admiration and respect for the core values and family-oriented approach of Larry Reynolds, his staff, and their clients.’’

Reynolds has represented the likes of All-Stars Torii Hunter, Justin Upton, Tim Anderson, Howie Kendrick, Kenny Hill and Matt Kemp. Steinberg Sports & Entertainment has represented 12 Hall of Famers and 64 first-round selections, including Steve Young, Howie Long, Troy Aikman, Edgerrin James, Kenny Easley, Drew Bledsoe, Bruce Smith, Thurman Thomas and Tony Gonzalez.

## Ron Burkle’s Yucaipa Acquires Stake in Steinberg Sports and Entertainment Agency

*Partnership will expand firm's activity in content production, marketing and business development*

Los Angeles, CA - Ron Burkle’s Yucaipa Companies has taken a significant equity stake in Steinberg Sports and Entertainment, the athlete representation and marketing firm headed by superagents Leigh Steinberg and Chris Cabott.

Steinberg Sports intends to use the resources from Yucaipa to expand the scope of its content production as well as its marketing operations and business development initiatives. The goal is for Steinberg Sports to tap into Yucaipa’s network of companies to fuel additional growth. Steinberg and Cabott will remain chairman and CEO, respectively, of Steinberg Sports.

Burkle will join Steinberg Sports as a partner. He has bought out the stakes of the private equity shareholders who helped Steinberg relaunch the business about 10 years ago. At present the primary owners of Steinberg Sports and Entertainment are Steinberg, Cabott and Burkle

Yucaipa in recent years has set investment partnerships with entertainment-related firms, including Hollywood agency APA, touring powerhouse Artist Group International, Rick Yorn’s LBI Entertainment, U.K.’s Independent Talent Group and the Los Angeles-based sports representation and marketing firm Independent Sports and Entertainment. Yucaipa also owns a majority stake in the entertainment-friendly Soho House group of private clubs and the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins franchise.

The connection to Burkle’s many companies will allow the Steinberg agency, founded by the legendary sports rep who inspired the 1996 Tom Cruise drama “Jerry Maguire,” to capitalize on the explosion of demand for sports-related content. The agency aims to work with clients on their own off-field pursuits, whether on endorsement deals or investing in startups.

“The worlds of business, politics, entertainment and sports are all coalescing,” Steinberg told Variety. “The concept here is we can have a sports studio that produces sports-themed television, motion pictures and documentaries. We can do high-level marketing with greater scope and scale. The alliance with Ron allows us the reach to do better and more exciting projects for them.”

Yucaipa’s pact with Steinberg reflects the flurry of activity among private equity investors to dive into the entertainment arena at a time of massive realignment across TV, film, music and digital. To cite but one notable effort, former Disney executives Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs have teamed with $2 billion in backing from Blackstone to roll up smaller content and related firms into a larger operating company.

Steinberg Sports made headlines last year when Cabott negotiated a record-setting $450 million, 10-year contract extension for Kansas City Chiefs’ red-hot quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The company has about 16 full-time employees and about 50 football clients. With the Yucaipa partnership, Steinberg aims to expand into other sports, but it will still maintain its boutique approach, Cabott said.

“We are going to have greater reach across industries, but still maintain that intimate level of attention with our clients,” Cabott told Variety. Cabott signed on with Steinberg Sports in 2013. He was named president in 2019 and upped to CEO last year.

Yucaipa’s activity in the hospitality and commercial real estate sectors could be of great interest to some of Steinberg Sports’ clients over the long term. Cabott stressed that the company’s agents aim to serve as lifelong business advisors to their athletes beyond their work on the playing field.

“They label us as agents. I look at us as career managers. This gives us more opportunities to help enhance the lives of our players,” he said.

The depth of Steinberg Sports’ relationships with its football stars was part of the appeal to Burkle.

“Leigh is a legend in the industry and Chris has quickly become a distinguished and respected agency leader,” Burkle said in a statement. “Culturally and strategically, this is a perfect fit. We look forward to collaborating with them as SSE continues to grow globally.”

Steinberg said he was impressed by Burkle’s track record as a philanthropist in Los Angeles and other communities. He also intends to keep pursuing his own “special projects” that are important to the firm, such as being a leading voice in the effort to better protect football players from sustaining concussions on the gridiron.

“We’ve been very involved in the fight against concussions,” Steinberg said. “We can help with new projects, whether it’s a new app or a new helmet. We can be involved in what we call ‘special projects’ that can have an impact on sports but also reach out to the larger market.”

Steinberg’s deal with Yucaipa also seals a comeback for the agent who saw his life and business torn apart in the mid- to late 2000s by a series of personal tragedies. He has been in recovery for alcohol abuse for more than a decade. After managing his addiction and regaining his prominence as a sports agent, Steinberg has also been fielding offers to tell his own story in narrative form. Or as he put it, “There’s a chance for me to tap into my own brand.”
