NEW YORK - Johnson attended the Super Bowl party of longtime agent Leigh Steinberg, where he was honored with the award for his charitable work. New Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan was with him.
Presented at Leigh Steinberg’s 28th Annual Super Bowl Party, Fisher received the inaugural Coach’s Award. In a blog post on Jan. 18, Steinberg wrote he and his partner, Cosmo DeNicola, established the honor “to create an award that recognized the community and charitable service that characterizes the typical lives of people involved with professional football.”
At the party Saturday Johnson was honored with the inaugural Steinberg DeNicola Humanitarian Award for his work in founding The Alliance for Lupus Research and the $1 million donation he and the Jets made to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Tower Foundation, which provides housing to wounded veterans.
“What it means to me is focusing on something that is very important to the New York Jets, which is community service,” Johnson said of the award. “But it’s not me, it’s the other 31 teams, as well — the Giants and the Patriots and everybody. The NFL spends a lot of time on community service, not that you want credit for it because we don’t do it for that reason. But we have a unique opportunity as team owners and the NFL itself to do public good.”
